about

Let me start by saying that the term "Old Man Rhythm" - from Frankie Ford's 1959 hit record "Sea Cruise" - is not meant to exclude anyone at all. It's just a feeling I feel, it comes from the ground and seeps up from your soles, like on a hot muggy day in New Orleans when you walk along the Mississippi River. Easy, swingy and loping, and when all your parts start moving together it can't help but be funky.

This album of mostly jazz standards is a bit of a departure from our more blues-based works. These songs nod to Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, Roy Smeck, Fletcher Henderson, Bob Wills, Charlie Christian, all very very rhythmic cats. And the women too - Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, Billie Holiday of course, not to mention present day inspirations like Karry Walker and Jill Rogers and Aurora Nealand.

That Mississippi river - Old Man River!! - and all the music that it washed down from St. Louis, Memphis and the Delta swirled around with sounds up from the Caribbean. It is the past, the present and hopefully the future too. Anyone anywhere can feel the old man rhythms we are playing here. Just get that feeling in your soles. Enjoy!
